We were recently appointed to deliver the refurbishment of a high-end apart-hotel in West London. During the routine pre-construction site audit, it was noticed that a large amount of domestic items and white goods to be cleared from site were still in an excellent condition. With the help of Encore Environment, we quickly identified two charities who could make use of the materials, and between us arranged the transportation and labour to deliver white goods, linen, crockery, and cutlery to homeless charity DENS and Dacorum Women’s Refuge .
Paragon and Encore recently met with representatives from the charities, which work very closely together, to talk about how the donation has benefited them, and to learn about the wider work the charities do.
Wendy Lewington, DENS Chief Executive, said that they had ‘never received so much in one donation’ and Linda Kirkland, Relationship Manager at DENS, agreed, ‘When all the goods arrived it was like all our Christmas’s had come at once!’.
Luciana, the DENS Warehouse Manager showed us what happened when donated items arrived at the Centre. After passing a PAT Test, white goods either go for sale in the shop, or go into one of the emergency and short-term accommodations that are provided by DENS. Other domestic items go on to form ‘Start-Up Packs’ which contain crockery, cutlery and other basic items required to build a new life.
