Two projects, delivered by Paragon, have been recognised as winners at this year’s Retrofit Awards, celebrating design, engineering and construction excellence.

The Retrofit Awards, brought to us by the Architects Journal, is highly regarded in UK architecture and we are delighted to be celebrating these successes alongside Duggan Morris Architects for The Loom in Whitechapel, which was awarded best retrofit of a Listed Building with a value of over £5m; and TP Bennett who won best Health and Wellbeing Project with the refurbishment of The Fortius Clinic in King William Street.

The Loom, a recent Riba National Award Winner, was completely reimagined to meet the requirements of a modern commercial building in London. The design embraces the building’s Victorian heritage, and while sympathetic to its origin, we created an inspiring modern collaborative environment. The judges stated that the project showed “a skillful and impressive ability to create modern contemporary–feeling space while fully preserving the character of the existing.”

The Fortius Clinic is at the centre of excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Working with an expert team, we created a truly state of the art facility. TP Bennett’s concept was to move away from the traditional medical blueprint, and deliver a welcoming and relaxing medical aesthetic. The result is a retreat with bright open spaces, soft organic forms with finishes reminiscent of a boutique hotel.

As the award website indicates, with £500 billion likely to be spent over the next three decades on upgrading existing housing, commercial and industrial buildings, the demand for retrofit and refurbishment work of this nature should continue.
